The MGM Grand has now been confirmed as the venue for what looks like being the fight of 2007.
Ricky Hatton vs Floyd Mayweather looks like a glitzy, glamorous fight, the likes of which we won't have seen for a while. The WBC Welterweight title is at stake in this bout.
Let's have a look at the careers of the two warriors in more detail.
Ricky Hatton
Nickname: Hitman
Age: 28
Fights: 43
Wins: 43
Losses: 0
Draws:0
KO's: 31
KO %: 72.1%
Last 3 fights:
13/5/06 vs Luis Collazo - Hatton won by unanimous decision.
20/1/07 vs Juan Urango - Hatton won by unanimous decision.
23/6/07 vs Jose Luis Castillo - Hatton won by knockout.
There have been many career defining moments in Hatton's career but arguably none more so than in 2005 when at a packed MEN Arena in Manchester he defeated Kostya Tsyzu for the IBF light Welterweight title. Since then Hatton has had a series of title fights, winning them all but we had to wait until June of this year before Hatton's next and indeed latest real defining fight. Mexican Jose Luis Castillo was the opponent at the Thomas & Mack and Hatton added the vacant WBC light welterweight title to his collection. This fight though represents something of a step in class again for the Hitman and he goes up in weight. Mayweather is classed as the best pound for pound fighter in the world today and will be a severe test for the Mancunian.
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Nickname: Pretty Boy
Age: 30
Fights: 38
Wins: 38
Losses: 0
Draws: 0
KO's: 24
KO %: 63.2%
Last 3 fights:
8/4/06 vs Zab Judah - Mayweather won by unanimous decision.
4/11/06 vs Carlos Baldomir - Mayweather won by unanimous decision.
5/5/07 vs Oscar de la Hoya - Matweather won by spilt decision.
There's no doubt that Mayweather is a quality fighter. His explosive punching style makes him a huge box office star. Mayweather comes out of retirement to take this fight but he's used to the big time. He's beaten some of the greats of boxing; Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo (twice), Arturo Gatti and Oscar de la Hoya have all been beaten by Pretty Boy who has been a world champion at 4 different weights.
Unlike Hatton, Mayweather has fought at the prestigious MGM Grand and he'll be confident ahead of the fight.
A clash in styles should make for a great fight and one which the boxing public around the world will countdown the days to. Hatton is sure to be well supported but very few things seem to faze the man from Las Vegas and it will be interesting to see whose style comes out victorious.
