The Tour Championship is the final event of the PGA Tour season and it's also the final event of the Fed Ex Cup for 2008. Tiger Woods won this tournament last year but injury will prevent him from defending his title. Vijay Singh currently leads the way in the 2008 Fedex Cup standings and a win here will see him win the lucrative title. Only 30 players take to the tee in this tournament as the Fedex Cup has whittled the field down to the best thirty players from the first 3 playoff tournaments.
Since 2004, The Tour Championship has been held at East Lake Golf Club, in Atlanta, Georgia. The course was the home of the legendary Booby Jones. Designed by Donald Ross, the East Lake course is a par 70 which is 7154 yards long, so fairly long for a par 70 course. Unusually for a tournament course, the finishing hole is a par 3 so anything can happen on the 72nd hole come Sunday. As well as being the permanent home of the Tour Championship, East Lake also hosted the Ryder Cup in 1963.
Tiger Woods shot an amazing 23 under par on his way to winning this tournament last year. Previous winners here include Adam Scott, Bart Bryant, Retief Goosen and Vijay Singh. Zach Johnson shot the course record of 60 here last year. With the course presenting plenty of birdie chances the winning score is often well under par. Looking at the list of previous winners here, the course seems to favour the straighter hitters rather than the bombers.
US golf is on a high right now having won the Ryder Cup last week and ten of that victorious side appear here this week. Focus would be the key thing for those players with lots of prize money up for grabs here.
