US Open Golf Betting Preview

One of the four major championships the US Open is held each year in June and is held at a different venue each year. In 2008 the event is held at Torrey Pines.

Because the US Open follows on from the Masters, most players have found their form by this time so expect the cream to rise to the top of the field.

US Open Champion 2007 is Angel Cabrera who after taking the title was quoted as saying "I beat every one here not only Tiger Woods". Cabrera held off world number one Tiger Woods to claim his maiden PGA title and is only the second South American to win a major.

Betting on golf has become more and more popular over recent years which is partly down to the amount of live TV coverage it now enjoys. Betfair has also helped betting on Golf, as you can now bet in-running literally shot-by-shot right until the final putt is holed.

There are plenty of different bets available for golf betting. These include outright win, each way bets, top 5 finish, top 10 finish, to place the cut, to miss the cut and plenty more. Don't forget that many of the bookmakers will be offering promotions and Free Bets whilst the US Open is on so make sure you claim yours.

Below we've listed the main contenders for the 2008 US Open.

Stan James are offering a £25 Free Bet on this event for new customers!

The Main Contenders

Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood is the defending champion and will be keen to get back to playing good golf after he had a pretty poor week in Kentucky last week. Westwood has lots of experience at this course and was one of Europe's stars when the Ryder Cup was here in 2002. If his game clicks he looks the one to beat.

Michael Campbell

Michael Campbell is another who knows this golf course well. He has two top 5's in this event since it moved to The Belfry but his game is going through a bit of a quiet patch. We saw in the US Open in 2005 what he is capable of however and with his course knowledge he can be expected to be in the mix if he finds his game at a course he likes.

Graeme McDowell

Graeme McDowell was one of the success stories for Europe last week remaining unbeaten and gaining 2.5pts from his 3 matches for his team. He was tied 8th here in 2006 and having won twice on tour this year in Korea and at Loch Lomond the Ulsterman is very much a man in form and could go close if he has shaken off last week's disappointment.

Ross Fisher

Ross Fisher just missed out on the Ryder Cup team but having won the European Open this year he has enjoyed success recently. Fisher is a solid player who is slowly moving through the rankings and isn't without a chance this week.

Darren Clarke

Darren Clarke may think he has a point to prove after he was snubbed by Nick Faldo for the European team last week. Clarke has won twice on tour this year and his game looks to be coming back to its best. At his best Clarke, who knows this course inside out, is very much a frontrunner to take the title this week.

Nick Dougherty

People speak very highly of Nick Dougherty's game but he hasn't delivered a title so far this year. Dougherty was tied 11th here last year in a much stronger field so if he can redeliver that performance he may not be too far away this week.

Colin Montgomerie

All eyes will be on Colin Montgomerie this week after he was left out of Europe's team last week. He knows this course as well as anyone and will be eager to get back to the winners circle again. On his day we all know Monty takes a lot of beating but his day doesn't come around as often as it should. If his game is in good nick though there's no reason why he won't be close on Sunday.

Soren Kjeldsen

Soren Kjeldsen was another who was pushing close for the Ryder Cup team. The Dane is a very solid player who is good form after numerous top ten finishes already this season. Kjeldsen was tied for 4th here last year and was in the top 15 the year before so he likes this course and could be one to watch this week.
