The World Matchplay event sponsored by Accenture is one of the three events in the World Golf Championship.
The event remained at one venue from 1999 until 2006 - La Costa Resort, Carlsbad, Californa, with the exception of one year when it moved to Australia.
The World Matchplay is a matchplay format knockout event, with the field consisting of 64 golfers, taken from the official golf world rankings. The players are seeded according to rankings, so in theory, the players towards the top of the rankings should get an easier path through the tournament.
All matches upto the final are 18 holes, and the final is played over 36 holes. There is also a 3rd/4th place playoff for the losing semi-finalists.
The prize fund for the 2007 event was a massive $8,000,000.
