Champion Bumper

The Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival is one of the more popular races at the meeting. Famous for big gambles on Irish-trained horses, the winner of this race nearly always goes onto a good career as a hurdler or chaser.

The race is run for four to six year olds, over two miles 100 yards, and is the most prestigious flat race in the National Hunt racing calendar.

One point to note for this race, is that unlike normal "bumper" races, professional jockeys are allowed to compete (and infact, professional flat jockeys often compete here).

A very popular race with the Irish who normally have some hot contenders here, infact trainer Willie Mullins has had great success having had multiple winners here in recent years.

Looking at the ages of the winners it is interesting to note that the five year olds do rather better than the four and six year olds.
