The James Nicholson Wine Merchant Champion Chase is held at Down Royal racecourse, it is open to horses of five years of age and above. A Grade 1 National Hunt chase with a race distance of three miles.
It is Down Royals premier chase of the year, and was first run in 1999. Contested by some real equine stars, the likes of Beef Or Salmon and Taranis have won this race. Although five year olds are eligible to enter the winner is usually found in the older eight to ten year olds. No five year old has gone on to win here.
