One of Britains five classic races and the second leg of the Triple Crown, The Derby is one of the biggest betting races of the year and is held at Epsom racecourse.

It's a Group 1 race for three year old colts, and many of the winners go on to compete in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe later in the year.

It is known as the race that everyone would like to win and is one of the most famous races in the world.

The Derby course is very testing and one which only the very best colts will cope with, speed and stamina is called for in abundance here.

Key Trends For The Epsom Derby

Fillies rarely take part, with the last winning in 1916, when they do run they are often not good value bets so always look at the colts first and foremost.
Look to the favourite or second favourite as these have the best record here, not for the past seven years has a horse over 7/1 won.
Jockeys Kieren Fallon and Johnny Murtagh have between then won the Derby six times since 1999, so consider any horses being ridden by them.
Trainers Aidan O'Brien and Sir Michael Stoute have a good record at The Derby and between them dominated this race from 2001 to 2004, so always consider horses that are from these yards.
Look for a horse that has won over at least this distance before, some horses seem good on paper but this race needs a horse with stamina not just speed so a great sprinter may not do so well here.
