The Fighting Fifth Hurdle is a grade one National Hunt Race held at Newcastle towards the end of the year. It is two miles in distance with nine hurdles to be cleared by the four year old horses and above.
There is a £1 million bonus for any horse that can win here and go on to win the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day and the Champion in March.
Because of this expect a lot of support for the winner here in the these races although not since 1989 has a horse followed and gone on to win probably because the tracks are so different at Cheltenham and Newcastle.
Straw Bear almost did it in 2006 but failed to shine at Cheltenham.
This race was due to be run last weekend but was cancelled due to frost at Newcastle. However, it has been re-arranged for this Saturday and is to be run at Wetherby racecourse.
