Gordon Stakes

The Gordon Stakes is a Group 3 race for three year old horses only. It is run over the Derby distance of 1m4f but is often a tricky betting heat because not only does it contain Epsom disappointments but it also brings in some improving 3yo handicappers and this year Sir Michael Stoute has the odds on favourite in the shape of Conduit.

The race was first run in 1902 and is named after the title of Duke of Gordon, one of the dukedoms held by the Duke of Richmond, owner of Goodwood Racecourse. It is a principal trial for the St Leger and eight individuals have gone on to complete the double, most recently Sixties Icon in 2006 - sent off the 7/4 favourite.

Favourites do have a good record in non-handicaps here and horses towards the head of the betting for this race have dominated the past decade... indeed, no fewer than eight of the last ten winners were sent off at single-figure odds. The chances are a gamble will arise around one of the less fancied runners here - forcing the price of the favourite to drift out a little so try to place your bets a bit later, within 15 minutes of post time would probably guarantee you the best odds.
