The Grand National is the most popular and biggest National Hunt race in England, it is known as the worlds greatest steeplechase.
Along with thousands of regular bettors it is a day when everyone seems to have a flutter on this most famous race.
Held every year in April its equine entrants race twice round Aintree racecourse covering a distance of four and a half miles. There is normally a big field for this event and can be around forty horses and jockeys all racing to get to the post first.
Many famous horses have won here but the most famous of all was Red Rum who won it three times in 1973, 1974 and 1977.
The course itself is very demanding, there are sixteen fences on the track fourteen are jumped twice. Only the very best stayers make it round to finish the race.
The 2008 John Smiths Grand National Meeting is Thursday 3rd April to Saturday 5th April, with the Grand National being on the final day.
Key Trends for The Grand National
- The winner is usually found in the eight to twelve year old horses, no horse younger than eight has won for 67 years.
- Look for horses with a handicap rating of 135 and above.
- Horses which are carrying no more than 11 stone 5 lb, remember every pound will make a difference over this demanding course.
- Horses which have previously won over three miles showing that they posses stamina.
- Horses that have experience of running in at least ten chases.
- Look at horses that have been trained especially for the Grand National, those that are fresh do better, Cheltenham was only a few weeks ago and those that ran there will most likely be tired.
- Dont be put of by an inexperienced jockey, far better to concentrate on the ability of the horse.
