Last Ran: 26th July 2008
The King George VI and QE Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race for three-year-old and older horses. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs at the new Ascot racecourse this year on 26th July.
It was first run in 1951 as a result of the amalgamation of the King George VI Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The race is top drawer in terms of quality, but what makes this race so special is that it brings together horses from all over the globe both male and female, to determine the best middle distance horse in the world.
Favourites have a very good record here, providing punters with four winners in the last four years and six in the past ten years - the interesting stat is that all four of the last winning favourites were four year olds. The past decade has seen only two winning three year olds, meaning the older horses are the much more favoured generation. Godolphin also do well in the race; trainer Saeed bin Suroor producing four winners since 1997.
Interestingly, this years race contains no three year olds and no horse in the lineup is trained outside of the United Kingdom. At the time of writing, Duke of Marmalade is the red hot favourite to supply trainer Aiden O' Brien with a thirteenth Group One of the season and a third win in this race in the last ten years. Although the favourite has all the stats in his favour, there ought to be value somewhere to oppose him. In depth analysis of each and every runner will be provided before racing.
