Last Ran: 19th April 2008
The Scottish Grand National is often contested by some of the horses that took part in the Grand National at Aintree, just a few weeks earlier in the year.
It is a grade three National Hunt race with a racing distance of four miles half a furlong and is open to horses of the age of five and above.
Twenty seven challenging fences for the horses to jump at Ayr racecourse where the race is held.
The race is the highlight of a two day meeting and is the richest jumps meeting in Scotland with £200,000 up for grabs just on the National alone.
Betting on the Scottish Grand National is massive and like the Aintree Grand National the horses are given an Handicap weight, this makes for a fairer and more exciting race as in theory it should give all of the horses a chance of winning.
Weight plays a very important part as obviously the more weight a horse is carrying the more difficult a task it will be for the horse to complete the course, therefore dont dismiss horses that have underperformed in the past as they will be allocated less weight here.
Scottish Grand National Trends
- No horse over the age of ten has won the Scottish Grand National since 1996. The majority of winners fit into the eight to ten years of age.
- Irish trained horses have done well here and Ferdy Murphy has won three of the last ten renewals.
- Look to horses carrying no more than 11stone.
- Nine out of the last ten winners had ran well in their previous race, coming no less than fifth place.
- Ten out of the last eleven winners have previously won over 3m.
- Only two favourites have won in the last ten years.
