St Leger

The St Leger is a race for three year old fillies and colts. It is considered to be the least popular of the British classics but never the less it always attracts great sums of money on the betting markets with punters all looking for the horse they believe has great stamina.

The race is the longest classic at 1 mile 6 furlongs which calls for a horse that can stay the distance rather than one that has the ability to quicken over shorter distances.

Many people have found the winner by looking at the previous classics that have been run over the season and look for breeding and form that suggests the horse would do better over a longer distance.

The more mature three year olds have a good record in winning this race and the ever popular jockey Frankie Dettori has won it for the past two years.

Held at the beautiful Doncaster racecourse in September each year it is part of a four day festival and has been running since 1776 making it one of the oldest classic races in racing, it is also part of the Triple Crown.

Betting on the St ledger usually starts straight after the Epsom Derby with many punters opting to go for antipost market where they can get good value but betting on the event continues right up until the day.

So, when looking for the St Ledger winner you need to look at the previous classics and the breeding and form for clues on which horses will go better over a longer distance, taking the Epsom Derby for example, were they any horses that needed that extra distance?

The ground is usually a little softer come September so note any horses that cope with softer ground.
