The 2009 National Spirit Hurdle gets underway on Sunday, it is Fontwells richest race.This year we have a strong field which includes last years winner Loug Derg who is trained by David Pipe. This nine year old is currently having a great season having already won twice at Cheltenham and Ascot before a respected runner up in his last outing again at Ascot.
Afsoun, the charge of Nicky Henderson came third in the Champion Hurdle in 2007, but more recently runner up in the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock and third at Sandown in his last outing in the Contenders Hurdle where he basically looked out classed.
Paul Nicholls has Pierrot Lunaire who seems to be struggling to keep on his feet after two recent falls, the last being the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton.
Straw Bear goes for Nick Gifford after some unsuccessful attempts over fences while Pouvoir who we haven't seen since December 2007 winning the Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle goes for Alan King.
