The 2009 Totesport Trophy Handicap Hurdle gets underway on Saturday at Newbury, weather permitting of course!
The bookies have the Gary Moore trained and Greatwood Hurdle winner Numide as this years favourite. He didn't perform as expected on his last outing in December at Ascot in the Ladbroke but his trainer is full of praise for this horse and believes that he has the ability to beat last years winner and fellow contender this year Wingman. He has had a break since the middle of December so should arrive nice and fresh, he could as the bookies suggest take all the beating especially with testing ground. If Numide can pull this off it will third year running for trainer Gary Moore.
Presenting Copper looks an interesting contender, last seen scoring at Cheltenham in January, trained by Philip Hobbs who also has Belcantista, runner up to Sentry Duty in the Ladbroke in December.
Songe carries top weight, this five year old trained by Charlie Longsdon won the Grade 2 Champion Hurdle Trial last time out at Haydock in December. He will have it all to do with the burden of top weight in the mud.
Others of interest for this puzzle of a race include Dee Ee Williams, fourth in the Rossington Main last time out and is reported to be very well, Dancing Tornado fifth in the Pierse Hurdle in January, Nigel Twiston Davies has Khyber Kim who has yet to produce anything special.
