Muller v Federer

Match Date: 4th September 2008

Muller is ranked 130 in the world, he is one of only a few players ranked low to reach the quarter finals of the US Open, he caused an upset in the last round knocking out Davydenko who was seeded five. A gustsy performance but he will have to dig deeper here, he was junior Champion at Flushing Meadows in 2001 but whether he can convert that to US Open winner has got to be in doubt.

Federer has made it this far but only just, his last match against 23rd seed Igor Andreev almost saw the end of Federer's 2008 US Open bid. He made a bundle of unforced errors and it was obvious that he found it a tough match. Federer is hoping for his first Grand Slam of the season here, he has had a terrible year and must be hoping for some consolation.

Federer is the obvious choice of course here and who would dare to disagree, even though he looks like a wounded man he there is no indication that he wont come through this match.

A straight sets victory for Federer but Muller made him work for every one of them before Federer finally came through 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (5).
