The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 is a series of nine tournaments across Europe and North America. The Masters Series was introduced back in 1996 under the name "Super 9", and until 1999 remained under that name. Since then it was known under a new title of the ATP Masters Series. From 2009, this has been changed to the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 with the 1000 referring to the number of ranking points a player wins for winning each event.
The tournaments are mandatory for the top players on the ATP Tour, and carry more ranking points than regular tournaments throughout the year. The Masters Series tournaments are amongst the most prestigious on the tour, and some finals have been played over five sets in the past, as in the Grand Slams. However, they are all currently contested over three sets.
Current holder of most ATP Masters Series Titles is Angre Agassi with seventeen, six of which came in Miami. He is being chased by Roger Federer, who has amassed a total of sixteen titles.
