Liverpool Stars Dominating the Betting Odds for the Ballon d’Or
Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk are among the three top potential winners of the Ballon d’Or, according to bookmakers. The two legends’ only rival in the race is Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
Bookies are showing faith in favourite Virgil van Dijk, and even though William Hill cut Salah’ chance from 16/1 to 7/1, Liverpool players are still in the three top candidates.
Ballon d’Or Odds
The reality is, bookmakers are split over Messi and Dijk. The two are the frontrunners to scoop the prestige award, even though 888Sport and William Hill are unable to agree on the favourite, and the discrepancy is clear from the odds.
888Sport is convinced that Messi would win the award, offering 3/4 odds on him. He had already won the prize five times, and winning the sixth one will finally help him break the tie with his eternal rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. He led Barcelona to the La Liga title, but this is not the only reason why he should win the prize. He was also the top scorer in the Champions League. In fact, with his 12 goals, he broke his own records, as these 12 goals are the most he has scored in Champions League in seven years. With William Hill, Messi’s odds are 6/5.
William Hill, on the other hand, believes that the Liverpool centre-back would be the winner, as he will become the first Liverpool player to win the award since Fabio Cannavaro won it. Dijk helped the team get to the second place in the Premier League, scoring 97 points along the way, and then took them to the finals in the Champions League, lifting the trophy after a 2-0 win. The odds for Dijk with William Hill are 8/11, while 888Sport offered even money on him.
The Possible Outcome
Considering Messi’s disastrous end in the Copa America playing for Argentina, where he was red-carded in the third-place match after bowing out in the semi-finals, chances are punters would place their bets on Dijk.
Virgil van Dijk was runners-up with the Netherlands, had a stellar performance in the Premier League and managed to take his team on the top in the Champions League.
But, let’s not forget that Mohamed Salah is also in the race. The Egyptian professional is in the third spot, and even though his odds were cut and Egypt was knocked out in the second round against South America in the Africa Cup of Nations, one can never know, he might go against the odds.
